Functional Jaw treatment Orthopedics
The process of directing the growth of the jaws using various devices during the growth and development period is called functional jaw orthopedics. The devices used in this period are called “functional appliances”.
While making the treatment plan, the patient’s growth direction is determined and it is decided which appliance or appliances he will benefit from according to the treatment plan.
Functional appliances are divided into two groups: mobile and fixed. Removable functional appliances are applied intraorally and/or extraorally. The disadvantage of removable orthodontic treatments is that treatment success depends on patient compliance. Removable functional appliances give successful results if used in accordance with your physician’s advice. The biggest advantage of removable appliances over fixed ones is that mouth and appliance cleaning can be done more easily. In addition, these appliances, which can be removed by the patient, should be stored well and not lost when the appliance is not in use.
Fixed functional devices are applied intraorally and cannot be removed by the patient. Therefore, minimum patient compliance is needed in functional jaw orthopedics performed with fixed functional appliances. The appliances and the mouth should be cleaned well, and care should be taken not to break fixed oral appliances. Otherwise, the effects planned to be achieved with the treatment will not occur.
